Would you take your camera to Chernobyl to photograph ruins?

4 years 10 months ago #647251 by Matt Nguyen
A buddy refered me to HBO show Chernobyl and I started to watch it 2 days ago.  Amazing and educational about what happened.  I came across this article:

https://www.boredpanda.com/i-went-to-chernobyl-with-my-hasselblad-500c-analog-camera-and-came-back-with-goosebumps-and-these-photographs/

Aren't things still radioactive there?  While I bet this would be awesome to photograph, I'm not sure I would be excited about going there for this purpose.

No way!

The closest I would do is fly a drone on a one way flight with a really good camera on it!

I am willing to take risks to get special pictures… even pay a price
but that is way over my capacity to evaluate safe risk management.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I would go on the out skirts and just use a hefty lens to get in close.

I would, but only from a safe distance with proper gear that would detect radio active stuff

Let's think about this: Would I go to a potentially highly radio active place for a photo of some ruins?  Nope, I'll leave that coverage for HBO.

Canon 5D Mark II | Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM | Canon 35L | Sigma 85 1.4 | Helios 44M-6 58mm(M42) | Zeiss 50mm 1.4 (C/Y) | Canon 135L | (2) 430EX II

What?  No way.

Don't get me wrong, I'm down for adventure and exploring ruins, but there are so many other places this can be done with out huffing in radioactive material from one of the worst nuclear tragedies to man.

I agree, that TV show did a good job.  I wonder if any of the proceeds made from the show will go to the people who were effected by this tragedy?  Very good series.  But for me, no, I'm not that much of a thrill seeker.

At first I was like yeah, give me a suit.  But even still, my camera would be all loaded up with radiation.  So, I'll pass too.

EF 35mm f/1.4L USM
EF 100mm f/2
EF 70-200mm f/4
