500 Rule doesn't work with newer cameras?

I'm in Photo Pills and looking around with app that I just downloaded and noticed it saying under 500 Rule  "Classic rule.  It fails with most recent cameras".

Why is that?

Because newer cameras have much better ISO performance than older cameras.

Sensitivity is sensitivity. The 500 rule still applies, but you might be able to munge the parameters a bit to get a decent shot.

For example, on my last late-night shoot, using a Nikon D750, I shot at 17mm, f/2.8, ISO 2000, for 15s.

Any modern DSLR can get star photos, even with a kit lens. Get out and experiment. You don't need the rule, you need to take a few test shots and tweak your settings.

:agree:  true, but how newer cameras are able to manage that sensitivity is a whole new ball game.

The 500 rule is more about movement than exposure. Exposure can be many different things but the calculation is about getting pin sharp stars. I assume they say it doesn't work because of more detail in higher megapixel images and you could see the movement more readily. I don't think it has anything to do with sensitivity.

There you go. Those are the words I couldn't get organized in my head and out as a comment.
