So as I understand it, stock photography is not really sizzling so much.

What about stock video?  Are you making an decent money from this?

The problem is that, compared to photography, a video production
implies much heavier investments…and there is a reference that will
reveal any lacking: cinema productions.

Yes, a very good friend of mine makes a living with video productions,
high end productions that is. It is not stock aimed but client oriented.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Maybe commercial work, I don't know. 'Everybody' is trying to sell photos (and maybe next videos too??) and there are sites that will take amateur quality (and usually pay little and terms often allow the site to use the photos forever, etc. etc.).

Get on ASMP or PPA or look at the Photo District News, etc. and find out about marketing your work. Or read articles like this that tell what's involved in getting permits, model and/or property releases, etc. to record video for retail or commercial (basically money making) purposes.

OP - are  you talking about those raw looking clips of tree's moving in the wind, thunder storms, cars driving on road?  Straight forward stuff like that?

Well now you are fighting with all the teenagers with GoPro's uploading videos.  Stock is stock IMO.

An Irishman is not drunk as long as he can hold on to one blade of grass to keep from falling off the world.

I think video would be worse, now you are fighting with every GoPro and smart phone, which my numbers is a lot higher than the competition for stock photos was.  It's just a super crowded space.  Unless you have thousands of videos, I don't think you'll make much $$.

I doubt you need to have thousands of video's.  Hundreds maybe.  I suspect it also depends on how many of these sites you belong too.
