Azden SMX-30 vs Rode Videomic Pro Plus

4 years 9 months ago #652539 by Ben Vanderbilt
Well this is a bummer, I misplaced my Rode mic and now my luck I need it for a video gig coming up.  I was going to just order a new Rode Videomic Pro Plus, but this Azden SMX-30 caught my eye.

Actually I was watching YouTube video's this morning and I came across this guys video, which he discloses that he was given the mic for review.  So while I was impressed, he does have a bias opinion.  Plus he's comparing it to an internal mic in a Panasonic GH5, which of course it's going to have better sound quality.  What would have been great is if he compared it to another professional mic.  But I  did like the sound isolation that this Azden mic showed.

I don't suppose you have compared it to the Rode videomic pro?

Hey Ben, the Azden has been around for a while.  I don't have experience with it, but know of this company.  Can't go wrong with the Rode mic.  I have this one and their micro one and love them.

Honestly, both are sold mics with negligible differences.

I've never used their microphones, but Griffin Hammond from the Indy Mogul channel has been recommending Azden for years. Check out Deity microphones for another alternative, because a lot of people are recommending them at the moment too (although as you suggest, sometimes when a lot of people online are recommending a product it's because they've been given it for free for an 'honest' review).

The Pro Plus does have some things to recommend it over the Pro, so I don't know if the Azden has the same features. The fact that it turns on with your camera is great, and the rechargeable battery is also good. But another thing to be careful of is the ergonomics. The Rode has the genius design where the audio input is on the back of the microphone, so if you want to use your viewfinder, you might end up with a wire in your forehead, depending on you camera. I've got the pro plus and it's basically the standard for on camera microphones, but as Ira says, you'll likely hear very little difference between any of them, so base it on the other features they have.
