Are you charging for mileage to jobs?

4 years 8 months ago #653100 by Jeff Scott
I haven't been charging for mileage or time to jobs.  I haven't driven that far to jobs, the longest was hour and 20 minutes.  Another photographer buddy told me before he moved to Haiti that I should be charging for mileage and time when driving to locations past 30 minutes from where I live. So...

1. Do you charge for mileage, if so how much?
2. Do you charge for time, if so how much and after what point?
3. If you get caught in traffic that pushes a 20 minute drive to 40 minutes.  Will you charge for timing?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Jeff

Yes, you should call out an additional charge for time and transportation outside of your home city. Or simply ensure your rates take that into account.

The US government's rate of $0.55/mil is woefully inadequate. You can figure out how much your vehicle costs to run per mile relatively easily, and that should tell you when and how much to add on.

G'day Jeff

Many years ago as an I.T. professional working with small businesses and home businesses [and when I wasn't too sure about things] I started to copy the washing machine repair blokes ... and started charging an 'arrival fee' then a 'time on the job fee'

More recently with photo training workshops throughout outback Oz - where mileages are in the thousands, I would arrange the workshop schedule so that we would travel a specific circuit at reduced cost to all concerned - but travelling costs were built into the fees. On one occasion I had a special request for a series of workshops out of schedule, and the client fronted up for a $3000 travel fee on top of the workshop fees

ps- Our 2019 trip clocked up about 7000km over 3-months

Hope this helps

Gear, car, time, etc are all operational expenses and should
be considered and reflected in your invoices.

In my commercial days I charged time and expenses.  Those expenses included travel.  If I drove, I charged the standard IRS rate at the time plus the time spend driving.  My clients, though, were businesses, not individuals.

My Jetta Diesel an 2018 Chevy Equinox diesel both get about 45 miles to the gallon so the standard govt rate works well for me.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
