Kangerlussuaq Airport in Greenland for photography adventure?

4 years 8 months ago #653548 by Photo Ranger
Is this the largest airport in Greenland?  Also, how much of Greenland is accessible for driving around via rented car?  Will I need AWD?

A buddy and I are looking at getting away and was thinking about Iceland, but nether of us have been to Greenland, so literally just starting my research tonight.

Let me know anything that might help.

Thanks!

I spent a month in Upernavik on an ocean research ship at
the very beginning — I was still a student at the university.

A 4x4 you say? A quad will be of better service. When the
ice was there, there were very little road needed. Now that
the ice is melting, things are not much easier. Most commu-
nities are reachable by boat and some by tracks. (from a re-
port of a friend of mine who was there last summer.)

Had more chance to travel in Iceland as there are more roads
but Greenland is very spectacular too.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

With all the warming going on, Greenland is changing so much.  I was watching discovery show about that a few weeks ago.  Sad really.

One of the most beautiful places on the planet.  Yes, that is the main airport.  Roads are small and, however front wheel drive or AWD of course will be fantastic.

Wasn't me :)

I feel the need to add that most towns don't have roads between them.  You have small roads in the towns, however most of the time you will be getting around via boat.  Just FYI.

Wasn't me :)

Just jump on a tour boat.  Getting around on land would be a head ache there.  I've seen some cool shots posted on Facebook lately of sale boats on the horizon during sunset, looks pretty sweet.

Damn!  Didn't know that.  Talk about small communities!

I had researched a little into traveling around Greenland last year.  Best thing you can do, the easiest is to go with a tour group or workshop.  That way, let them organize and deal with all the travel arrangements. I checked with a number of people who had gone there solo and they said it's a pain getting around.

Remote spot to get around too, but you can do so via boat.   But when you do, it's one of the most beautiful places on this planet.  No joke!
