Do 'HD' images exist on the web?

I was reading another blog today where there was mention of "HD images" for the web.  I thought the photos on the web can only be so good before its water under the bridge?

Have things changed or did I read something incorrect?

Yes, things are changing much and fast.

What was internet standard 10 years ago was improved
greatly as bandwidth got bigger. So both, photos and vi-
deos can be used at greater resolutions that will match
the quality of recent monitors.

If you use video as an analogy, then yes, you can categorize the size of images.

But it seems silly.

Images are what they are: large or small, detailed or not. You can have a high resolution images that is compressed beyond reason, and you can have a small image that isn't compressed at all (a PNG, not a JPG, for example).

So what? I can at this moment think of no reason why using such a term has any value. I am, however, interested to hear of anything new.

For the web, like posting here, I always go for high quality
at low resolution —> 72 ppi @ 1024px long side.

For my clients, I present 150 ppi @ 2000 long side and at
highest quality but with watermark.
