Sony a6400 vs Panasonic GH5 for video?

4 years 7 months ago #656080 by SJM
I want to get another camera for shooting video.  It needs to be small, but something with good autofocus.  I've noticed a few of you with these cameras, but are you using them for video or still shots?

Any idea which is considered the better camera for video?

Sony will be better at low light because of larger sensor.  Panasonic will be better with image stabilization.

The Sony also has much better autofocus if that's something you need. It's also significantly cheaper.

If you shoot yourself, the Panasonic may be better because its articulating screen is more usable, whereas the Sony's flip up screen will be blocked if you want to add a microphone or other accessories to the hot shoe (you can get a small adapter to attach your microphone to the side though). The Panasonic has 4K at 60fps, whereas the Sony only has 30fps. But the biggest advantage of the Panasonic is the stabilization, which is just incredible. The Sony has no in-body stabilization at all, which means you need to buy stabilized lenses and they still won't be a match for the GH5. Another big issue is that the Sony doesn't have a headphone jack, so you can't monitor your audio properly.

Given your budget, I'd also add the Fujifilm XT-3 to the list of options. One thing that sometimes gets overlooked is the lens selection, and the Fuji has some incredible lenses for this format (although they're not cheap). The Sony's selection of native lenses aren't particularly great, and although you can use their full frame lenses, this will be with a 1.5 crop. Sigma do make some nice lenses for the Sony though.

The final point is the video codec. The Panasonic and Fuji both shoot 10 bit video internally, whereas the Sony shoots only 8 bit. It's not a huge issue if you're just going to cut some clips together and post it on Youtube, but if you're going to do any sort of colour grading or correction, then it's a definite advantage.

So yeah, the Panasonic and the Fuji are probably better cameras overall, but then they're $600 more expensive, so you'd expect them to be.

Actually didn't Panasonic release a firmware update that made adjustments to the autofocus issue?

GH5 slow mo is crazy awesome.  Isn't the color science stronger with the GH5?  I have a buddy that has had the GH4 and GH5 and I seem to remember him telling me about the color science.

Panasonic should be coming out with their GH6 this year or early 2020.  They are due.

The problem with that Sony is that if you are shooting video, you need to have that thing on a gimbal or your footage is going to look all jittery.

The real interesting part around the GH6 rumors is "According to latest rumors coming from trusted rumor mill. Panasonic GH6 camera may use 35mm / Fullframe sensor".

Full frame GH6?  And still have the same image stabilization?

I can't see that happening. Most of the features that make the GH5 special for video can't be replicated in full frame without the thing overheating. That's why we still don't have any small-bodied full frame cameras that can shoot 4K 60p without a crop and why the Nikon Z6 only records 10-bit externally. Personally I'd be looking at the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera for ideas about the sort of features we can expect. 12 bit RAW internal recording might be one of the features. I don't see why they'd make the GH6 full frame when they've just released some full frame cameras. And unsurprisingly, the S1 has a 1.5x crop on their 4K 60p video (although it does record 10 bit internally).
