Canvas prints and heat exposure

4 years 7 months ago #656425 by Rob Conley
My wife and I bought a new house earlier this year.  One that has a real fireplace!  A couple months ago during a cool night, right after we moved in, we tested out the fire and cracked a bottle of wine open.  It was perfect.  What else was perfect is the space above the fireplace for a print.  However it did seem a little warm after the fire had been going for a couple hours.

So, will a canvas print be damaged if exposed to heat? If so, at what temperature does this become a problem?

Thanks for the help.

How warm? Warm is in, toasty, or warm as in, you couldn't touch the wall?

I can't imagine any fireplace that would allow a dangerous amount of heat to reach the wall over a mantle.

Plus how much time will there be a fire burning?

Are you talking about a print of your own work? Or buying something?

That said:

Worst case, the print yellows over the years. Replace it. But a "bit" of heat should not be a problem. The combustion point would depend upon the material (cotton is 201° - 304°, paper is 451° F, oddly enough...). If you have a wall that hot in your home, you have a much, much bigger problem.

I don't have a temperature gun, but I would say it's just warm to the touch.  This will be one of my prints, that has yet been selected.  Wanted to check about the heat issue first.  As far as how long, well that depends, We might have it running for 8-10 hours at the longest.

You'll be fine unless it's right up against the chimney.
