What you really need is good glass. I don't know enough about the Sigma 10-20, but I know that that Nikon 16-35 is quite nice. And can be had used for $650-$700. For zoom, the Nikon 200-500 or the Sigma or Tamron 150-600 (I preferred the Nikon). That will set you back about $1150. Your camera is perfectly capable of meeting every need you describe in your post.
But really, until you can define your goals, and current challenges, stay put.
