Higher MP in cameras the race to nowhere?

I'm not looking to start a fight, but just get a more grounded sense of where everyone is at.  Do you feel this MP race is heading nowhere?

I had a detailed discussion today with another photographer who felt this way.  I shared with him that while I agree'd for the average everyday small prints, this isn't needed.  But when you get into landscapes, wildlife and nature, the higher MP really pays dividends when you to to the printer.   When you consider having more MP, that just means you can crop in more if you need too.  Kind of acts like an insurance policy huh?

I think as MP increase, all cameras will benefit from this boost in camera performance, which one day may lead to better prices for more.

In a class, earlier this year, I compared F1 cars (where all developments
come in a F1 package) with MP sensors where MP is only one element
of the equation.

MP won't come alone, many other aspects are improving along and this
is most beneficial.

It is a race to make cameras "obsolete" and sell new ones.  As one who has spent most of his life using film, I can say that digital has surpassed film many MP ago.  We have all the resolution we need.  The arguments for more resolution are the same as they were when sensors were 5 MP. The manufacturers should work on making smaller pixels perform as well as larger ones.
