Question about dual memory card slots and preference

When your camera has dual memory card slots, does it make any difference which slot you are using if you are using just one memory card?

That depends upon how you have the camera set up, and how it behaves.

If you choose RAW + JPG, you would get RAW to the primary card, and JPG to the secondary card. If, however, you media in only the second slot, then it would depend upon how they programmed the camera. A case could be made for writing JPGs to the second slot, or RAW, since there's only one card inserted.

If you have the second slot set for overflow or backup, then, no, it wouldn't matter (I would think).

I'd suggest experimenting with the settings so that you fully understand the behavior of your camera.

When going with RAW+ JPG, does that take extra resources from the cameras performance.  Meaning will the buffer be shortened?

How do you have your camera set up?  Are you using 1 or 2 slots?

I use both slots in both my main cameras, both set for max raw and over flow.......I don't fret card failures.

Why so serious?

The processor in the camera is going to be used to create the JPG, yes, but I've not noticed a significant impact upon buffer. The buffer only comes into play for burst shots anyways; writing both RAW and JPG files to the card is going to be the least of your worries.

The only situation now where I really need a long burst of frames is when I shoot jousting. I'll use short bursts for portraiture (because expressions can change when they hear the shutter). No longer do I need to do so for most sports or ballet, having learned how to shoot those.

The other question: I will change my setup depending upon what I'm doing.

Now that I use primarily SanDisk, with some Samsung, cards, I worry less about failures. However, for a gig, needing to be sure, I run them in backup mode. If I'm shooting something that is less critical, I'll run them in overflow mode. If I'm on vacation and I want to be able to post online, I write RAW+JPG to both, and use the Nikon WMU app to transfer JPGs to my iPad for tweaking and posting.

I didn't know Samsung made memory cards.  How do they compare to Sandisk or Lexar?

I got them from Adorama during a sale, sometime back. They're fine. Really no different from SanDisk with respect to behavior.

They apparently only make microSD cards now.
