Will 2020 Olympics be dominated by Mirrorless or DSLR?

Tokyo Olympics is right around the corner!

This year should be good.  But will there be more mirrorless cameras or DSLRs?  I'm sure the manufactures are greasing up the wheels with sports photographers from all over.

Wanna get some bets going?

Canon 7D w/grip, Canon 40D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 70-300mm f2.8; Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro; Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6

It will still be dominated by DSLR. 2024 nay be a different story. It will be interesting to see. I expect to see a few Sony A9's in 2020 but the majority will be DSLR's.

Agree, the mirrorless aren't there yet.  Close.   Sony a9's will definitely be on full display there.

Mirrorless cameras are not quite ready to handle sports. Possibly/probably by 2024, as stated, but not yet.

Wouldn't be reasonable to think mirrorless can be…

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Not true, The Sony a9 is very capable of handling high speed sports.  I do agree that others don't exactly have a good position, possible the Z7 from Nikon, but nothing  else jumps out yet.

How many of them actually have the native lenses to shoot sports? I think Sony are the only ones to have 600mm f4 and are about to bring out a 400mm f2.8. For Nikon and Canon, you'd have to adapt.

Depends on what the manufacturers provide, like in the latest olympics...

I don't think Mirrorless cameras are going to be used in the 2020 Olympics. They might take some time to come. Brands are working on them. It is going to be interesting to see Mirrorless cameras in sports.:)

Not yet, you'll likely have a few.  But 2024 will be the year for mirrorless stronghold at Olympics.

Most likely all Pentax cameras will be used

Seriously, what happened to Pentax, are they not trying.  Seems like you keep hearing less and less of them.

+1 2024 for mirrorless.

I was supporting Invictus games in Sydney last year, with my R3 (whose AF if awesome but pales compared to A9). I had to reduce my FPS to something like 3, since I was getting way too many duplicates -- all sharp, in focus etc. The guys with the mighty 1D struggled a lot to capture, thus sitting at 14FPS all the time and dreading culling.

Obviously this is an isolated episode by someone (me) who does not have much clue about the world of professional sport photography. I guess the question is not much about the capability of the gear (for which I'd argue Sony mirrorless is by far superior) but the whole ecosystem and supply chain that no mirrorless vendor has at the moment.

By your own admission, you are inexperienced. yet you draw conclusions that are unsupported. Do you not see a problem here?

Invictus Games: which events? They're not all the same.

Finally: if you think a high frame rate only produces duplicates, you really don't understand shooting sports.

My husband was just talking about wanting to go, if so, there would be one more mirrorless camera there!
