Will Megapixel price mature the same way RAM memory price has?

4 years 6 months ago #660336 by Francis
Interesting thought when you look back at how certain things in technology has evolved price wise.  Using RAM as a good example.  10-15 years ago RAM cost was super high.  Now technology has evolved making it easier and cheaper to make RAM, and the price reflects it much more favorably for the consumer.

Could see the same with megapixels?

RAM is more expensive now that it's been for a long time.

Maybe, Francis, but I think we will nee to see the vertiginous
progression stagnate a while, as long as the quest for MP is
supported — in this, I'm guilty as charged too! — there won't
be much of a chance.

The possibilities are not exhausted nor the technologies.

Odd, a D800 with 36.3 MP was half the price of a 20.8 MP D5 ?
I believe there's more to a cost than megapixels....

Why so serious?

To own the latest comes with a premium, the D800
Is no longer at the top since sometime. I was talking
about the vertiginous progression and the market.

I think we already see that, but to equate the price of a camera body with only the pixel count is a bit simplistic. For example, you're not considering the performance of those pixels, which has improved considerably over time.

Part of the cost of development is hardware, but increasingly, part is software. And as an aggregation, you can't really separate the parts in any quantifiable way.

Short answer: yes, you're already benefitting from how that works.

ram is ram. Mega pixels is just one of thousands of parts (if you were to call it a part) inside of a camera. If the price of megapixels did drop everything else would need to in order for us to really notice it.

It didn't matter, a newer D850 was half the D5 price....Better?
