Let's just say I'm only passing along what I've learned.

Does National Geographic have any full time photographers part of their staff or are they all freelance these days?

National Geographic's website has a place to submit your image called "Your Shot". Every day they select a dozen which are featured in the "Daily Dozen". At the end of the Month, one or two images are selected to be published in their magazine. Now, it's not like working for them, but they will get to see your images. Mind you, a lot of images are sent in, so your image has to strike a chord with them. I had an image back in October of 2007 that made the "Daily Dozen" but It didn't make the print issue.... Bottom line, it's not easy to shoot for them. Not only do you have to show photographic expertise, but also be able to tell a story with your images... As for money or fame, well, by being a photographer for them, it will open other doors, which in turn could lead to both fame and money...
