My camera doesn't take good photos

"My camera doesn't take good photos".

If someone said that to you while holding a Canon 5D Mark II.  What would you say to them?  Yesterday at a small photograph Meetup walk, a newcomer I was speaking to said that to me.  He said he was after the new Canon 5D Mark IV.

I asked why?  He only commented on "It's old, the camera tech isn't all that good anymore".  Frankly he lost me here.

I wanted to say that it wasn't his camera that was holding him back.  But I just pretended a text came in and walked away to answer my fake text.

What would you have said in this case?  Bite your tongue or lay it on him?

As a Nikon shooter, I would have agreed with him…
all the way!

As a teacher I would have said something like: " If your
camera can't take good pictures, maybe it's time you
consider making them?

In a meetup, I think you did waaaay better than I would
have for sure… you're a cool dude Bob! :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

My response would be, "throw it away and try something newer".....

Why so serious?

G'day Rob

Nah fellas .... nuthin' like that .... just tell 'im ta use his fone coz they're so good these days

seriously tho - I have had this sort of discussion with others over the years, and my response [like above] has sometimes to walk away if I feel the fella is a wanker - or to sit and talk if the person seems to be 'just confused'

Seriously? Not one worthwhile reply?

Wow.

One possible response would be: "Well, the camera is a tool. So, for me, I'd suggest that it might be more productive to improve your skills at using that tool. Have you taken any classes? Do you have a friend that is skilled at photography, that would be willing to assess your photos, find out what you're dissatisfied with, and perhaps offer suggestions on how you might address those gaps? Is there a photography club nearby that you could raid for a mentor? And most importantly, are you willing to critically evaluate candidates for that role?"

IOW, gently suggest identifying needs, then building skills, and working with those more accomplished. And that are able to provide feedback and direction in an appropriate manner.
