Weather seals on cameras and salt water

4 years 6 months ago #661928 by Cathy Kadolph
If a wave sneaks up on you and splashes salt water over you and your camera.  Will the weather seal protect the camera?  This happened to me yesterday and I haven't turned on the camera yet.  Kind of scared.  Want to make sure if it needs to dry, it can.

One thing is sure, salt will not make water penetrate more
or faster. Use a dry cloth to get rid of the water. The salt
remaining — if any — may be wiped off with a damp cloth.

G'day Cathy

Salt water will kill cameras & electronic equipment very quickly if not removed asap

As NS says - wipe the camera down with a damp cloth - maybe needing 3 or 4 times to get all the salt off - and then 'polish' it clean with a soft cloth to bring it back to 'good' condition.

ps- if you ever get a tripod salty-wet, you will need to disassemble the entire legs and wash clean prevent salt corrosion - else the tripod legs will lock up never to extend again

Hope this helps

That's the fact. Don't be afraid of a dampened with fresh water cloth.....
Edit...If you were using a zoom lens especially, do NOT operate zooming until you clean it and it dries!

Why so serious?

This is a case where "IF" lenses shine… even the zooms!

I'm betting she wasn't using an "IF" lens.

Salt water is just brutal to anything it touches.  Long time ago I worked at a boat marina and inside or out, boats just get crushed by being near the ocean.  Even he salt air is so horrible.  So yes, salt water will do damage if you don't clean off properly.
