There's a closed  Facebook photography group I belong too and someone posted this question yesterday and some of the answers were so stinking funny.  To good not to repost this question here today and see what comes from that.

Since I don't do social media, I am
not familiar with the expression.

Spray and Pray,  It means to have your camera set up in a fast burst mode, shooting several photos per second, and then to simply hold down the shutter button, hoping to capture the perfect image within the sequence.
Its an older expression than any social media, but popularized in the digital era.....

Why so serious?

Thanks for that, Ernesto!

Oh no, I don't… cause I don't pray, I plan.
The best camera being a P&S, I'll set mine to behave like one.

The term spray and pray usually assumes the person is simply holding down the trigger and using the instrument in a reckless manner. It comes from a lack of experience or it’s a “last ditch effort” to achieve a goal.

It’s subjective and there is some relativity involved. For instance, in macro photography, or wildlife photography, the shots are planned only to an extent. You can only attempt to act on your knowledge of behavior of that subject. Its actions can be something that completely contradicts that. In these cases, we could “spray and pray” in hopes to get something. It Takes many many photos to capture the perfect moment sometimes.

One more example; when I am attempting to photograph bees in flight, I will set up close to a flower that has a lot of activity on it. As the bees come and go, I “spray and pray”, in essentially, as they come and go. Most photos are no good. It’s maybe one in 40-150+ that are the really good ones (my standards of “really good)

G'day Chester + others

For starters, I don't like the term "spray & pray" as it sounds too much like the film versions of the marines who just keep pulling the trigger until the ammo runs out, then look around to see if they did any good!!

However, occasionally with our photography, some pre-planning for the use of continuous mode can pay back with excellent results. In our local estuary we have a large family of dolphins, and yesterday I walked along the breakwall to its joining with the ocean to watch the antics of the juveniles in the pod - jumping into the air and splashing down again. Here's one of my shots - on continous at 12fps

The remaining images from this burst were all deleted afterwards. Spray & Pray?? - some might say so, but others will say 'been there - done that' and continue enjoying this world of image making

As always, feedback welcome
Hope this helps

Only time I have sprayed and prayed was shooting race cars.   I found myself just pointing at the bunch of cars at times and just hoping like hey that I got a good shot.

I'm trying to think of when I have used a spray and pray shooting method.  Nope, nothing is coming to mind.  I was even trying to come up with something to be funny, no dice for me.
