50mm vs 35mm

How do you feel about the 35mm vs 50mm lens?  I had been following this interesting discussion on another board for last month and would like to see how the peeps here feel about the comparison.

You see 50mm lens has been revered as a must have for photographers.  Where as the 35mm will yield a much wider field of view and will keep you on your toes as you need to get closer to your subject to photograph them.

The internet is hilarious when you want to find a view, as there are so many that will say the complete opposite and consider the 50mm as a waste of space, a boring focal length. What about you?

A lens is a tool and the choice of tool is something
very personal. I could not help you in any other way
than to suggest you try them both to see which one
fits you approach and your need the best.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I have a 50f/1.8, a  50f/1.4 and 35f/2....(Also 35 f/1.8 DX) I'll be honest, I use the 35  more than either fifties, probably because its wider and can get pretty close to a subject. I can't even remember the last time I took a fifty out.

Why so serious?

The only time I shoot at 50mm is when I'm using my short f/2.8 zoom and land there by happenstance.

I generally don't find that focal length appealing.

That said, I own two lenses in that range: A Helios 44-2 58mm and a modded Zenitor 2/50. Both Russian, both having interesting, atypical character.

Sorry, my post here wasn't clear.   I don't need help on picking one of these lenses, this is more to capture your views of preference between the two.

Just for fun thread.

Not sure I have a preference both are useful. I actually prefer zooms though. I use them basically as a bunch of prime lenses in one, depending on the subject.

Same here.  Between the 50mm and 35mm, I just don't use them as much as I do with zooms.  I can leave the house with one zoom and cover both of those and more.

Canon 5D Mark II | Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM | Canon 35L | Sigma 85 1.4 | Helios 44M-6 58mm(M42) | Zeiss 50mm 1.4 (C/Y) | Canon 135L | (2) 430EX II

Yup, my 24-70 f/2.8 covers both and is exceptional, IMO.
A few years ago I sorted my images in Bridge via focal length. Most (75% +/-) using my 16-35 f/4 were in the 19 to 22mm range. I found getting the 20mm f/1.8 a no brainer, better in low light and weighs much less than the zoom. I still have that short zoom lens on the camera most of the time though.....

Why so serious?
