NEVER let friends borrow camera gear. EVER!

4 years 5 months ago #665600 by MYoung
So frazzled.  I let a friend borrow one of my flashes and two lenses.  She just returned it and there are little scratches all over the flash and one of the lenses looks like it rolled around in her car for the  last 2 weeks that she had it!  Actually so does the flash.  There is scratch and scuff marks all over this.

No wonder why she  just dropped  it off and said she had to run.

Annoyed.  Beyond annoyed!

Unfortunate.

I have a strict policy when I ask to borrow something: it will be returned in the same condition as when I borrowed it, or I will replace it. Or whatever is necesssary.

I say this out loud, to the lender's face.

The trick is to say the same thing to a borrower, before they've left with the goods, and get their agreement. So that expectations are set and clear. And then, only with people that you trust enough that you really don't have to say it in the first place.

Otherwise, the answer should be "no", followed by a link to borrowlenses.com.

You need to confront your friend, calmly, and make it clear that there's a problem that only she can fix. Unless you think it will not change anything, you figure the friendship isn't worth it, and you won't lend her anything ever again.

Although she sounds more like a user than a friend. But what do I know.

WOW, not cool at all.  Did you call her up and ask her about the condition of the returned gear?

This has been discussed ad nauseam...I never loan my vehicle, camera gear or golf clubs....My sons are the exception, and a good friend would never ask.

Why so serious?

Ha ha ha!!!

I was going to say the same thing.  Not a good friend to have, ditch them.

Horrible though.

I would be sympathetic and more understanding if she was upfront about it.  However it's hard to have mixed thoughts when she takes off like that.

Did you reach out to her yet?

No comment.  Nothing positive at least.
