Hi! I am new here but I am getting a camera for Christmas but I need help on deciding what to get. I live on a farm so I have animals I want to take pictures of but I also have some people that want to have some pictures taken of them. I'm still new to the whole photography thing so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I guess these animals are accustomed to you so you don't
need to go very long lens wise… max 200 mm in a zoom.

In terms of body, perhaps 24 MP could be enough FX or DX
though I am biased toward FX.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Most any camera you buy today is capable of "taking" good pictures of animals and people, you need to go touch them and decide what's best for you......

Why so serious?

G'day Kayla

As effron says - you need to look and handle something to decide whether it suits you .... much like a pair of shoes, no-one else can dictate what will suit you 'best'. Cameras have varying sizes and weights and all need you to hold them to see if it sits well in your fingers

From your post, we do not know whether you have any photo skills or prior experience - so that is a bit of a worry too.

Some here will suggest a good interchangeable lens camera (called a dSLR) - a good choice if you are planning to become very serious about your photography ~ and it will involve the purchase of extra lenses as you develop your skills

I use - and invite you to consider - a fixed lens "superzoom" camera, often called a 'bridge' camera, where you have a camera with all the knobs and buttons of the interchangeable lens cameras above, but its lens is not removable because it covers just about all the possibilities of the dSLR cameras.

If this type of camera appeals at all, I invite you to chase up the following (for about $US400) ...
www.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/compacts/panasonic_dmcfz300

Hope this helps
