Taking photos of homes

I've been practicing with my real estate shots and have a few questions:

1. are we allowed to take photos of random houses?
2. do homes need a model release?
3.  If I take a photo of someones home with a drone, can I offer to sell the photo to them with out getting in trouble?

Yes, no and maybe not a good idea......

Why so serious?

In the US, anything visible from a public location is fair game for a photograph. What you do with it is the issue, but you are permitted to practice all you wish.

You mean "property release" and that usually applies to commercial use.

Most folks don't need images of their home until they sell, and then the realtor will usually take care of that. As for flying a drone over a neighborhood, you want to check the laws on UAV operation. They've changed.

+1 Get friendly with the drone laws, they are tightening up and can have some pretty stiff fines if you are caught doing something you aren't supposed too.

If you do it quickly, from a public road, yes.  From private property is a problem, assuming you get caught.  While the law allows photography from a public road, as the prior post stated, not all home owners know this or care to honor this.  Make a big production out of getting the shot and it may irritate the homeowner, with arguments and threats to follow.
