Gnarbox 2.0 SSD worth the asking price?

4 years 4 months ago #668330 by Chris Briggs
Anyone drop the green on one of these?  $900 bucks for a 1TB seems a little high for back up storage.  Just saw YouTube mention of this thing and kind of need something for back ups in the field.

Would you spend the cash on one of these?

That's way out of my price range. Until those SSDs get reasonable I'll just use a couple or three standard hard drives for my redundant image storage....

Why so serious?

Transfer speeds are insane.  Well as I see it, they aren't available yet, so have some time to think about this one.

Regarding the storage itself, no, it's not worth it. Regarding the "ruggedness," no, it's not worth it.

SSDs have no moving parts. the only problem with spinny drives is dealing with shock. But that is one huge advantage with solid state devices: essentially shock-resistant.

They seem to include a battery (why? SSDs can be powered from a USB port) and some software (what if your workflow won't benefit from those apps?). Those ask the big questions regarding value, but given that a 1TB SSD, along with a good case, now runs less than $150, it's hard to imagine how that premium price can be justified.

Ah: looking closer, it looks like there's an SD slot for off-loading a card. Which can be easily managed with a laptop and large external drive when you're back in the hotel room. (I had a Wolverine at one point, and learned that it wasn't a tool that worked for me.)

What value would you put on that crazy transfer speed?  That is far quicker than anything else that I have seen on the market by a considerable amount.

You do understand that SSDs, by their nature, offer transfer speeds of 500MB/s or more, right? Why, right here is a generic WD Blue spec'ed for reads at up to 560MB/s.

That number for that product is not terribly impressive. Many SSD products will match or exceed that.

It's important to consider the feature of that product, and determine whether they are of use to you.

:agree: right on the money here.  It has some selling points, but not enough to warrant that price.

I'm sorry so this is an external hard drive right?  Just something you can download directly too?

If you go read the web page, you find that it can act as an external hard drive, but you can also transfer files from SD cards onto the drive. It may do more, but I only scanned.
