Does IBIS matter or even OIS over VR or IS?

Who's a techy here?  Prior to a few years ago, VR and IS on lenses could save you 2-4 stops if I recall.  So now certain camera bodies boast about 5 stops, so how is this different or better?  Stops are stops right.

It's not, and never was, a matter of "saving" you stops.  It's allowing you to shoot at 2 to 4 (and maybe now 5) stops slower shutter speed handheld.  Theoretically.

So comparing apples to oranges I'm guessing.

No, apples are apples. All those systems work to "stabilize" the lens/camera when hand holding as stated. When on tripod its suggested you turn off the feature. It could make a couple stop difference in questionable light....I don't buy for or five.

Why so serious?

The various flavors are just implementations of the same feature. Which is kinda irrelevant from a functional perspective. The idea of IBIS is that the camera takes care of it, instead of implementing in each and every lens.

Some may doubt it but I know the latest Olympus bodies do give a 5 stop advantage and more if you have a lens that is Sync IS compatible. The main advantage of IBIS is it stabilizes all lenses.
