Hybrid film and digital camera?

4 years 2 months ago #673284 by Ontherocks
Was there a camera manufactured that shot both film and digital?  In our photography meet up yesterday, another photographer was talking about such a camera.  I can't find in my search on Google.

So is there one?

I never heard it exist and I suspect that it would not work.
The sensor would then have to be positioned behind the film first.
Then, to have sharp pictures on both — assuming the film is at the
correct position…
  1. how do you get the chip forwards to a proper place every time?
  2. How do you avoid sensor surface abrasion with the film maintained under pressure for adequate flatness?
I many a few more questions but let's start with these.

Maybe the photographer was just pulling your leg?

Exactly.  And if one did exist, I figured it would be very large in order to house all the needed components.   But can't imagine who would even want something so large.  Kind of like the rumored mirrorless and dslr camera.

Although I retained a couple nice film cameras, I will never shoot film again. On a regular basis anyway.
I think someone was putting you on.

Why so serious?

Not that I ever heard of... (and I've been a photographer a long time!). I don't know if it would be possible but seems unlikely there'd be enough market/demand for such a thing for anyone to bother to manufacture one.

I shoot film and digital (use the same lenses on film rangefinders and my digital camera) and that I now know from the infinite wisdom of the internet means I'm a hybrid photographer (who knew!), but I don't know about a hybrid camera... You'll have to ask the person at the next meetup what he/she was talking about (the answer might be entertaining!).

It's a concept using interchangeable backs.  I don't think it's in production yet.

I do use a camera system that lets me switch backs
and sizes but that is in medium format only.

My father shot film back in the day.  I remember when digital came, someone had made a joke about what he needed was a film and digital camera built into one.  This was a joke and meant to poke fun at my fathers reluctancy to move to digital.

Not only your father was reluctant, I was so too.
It took the D3S and the D3X to make me switch.
Now, there is now way back!

There was talk (rumors?) of some makers offering camera backs to convert film cameras to digital. I think the manufacturers came to their senses, not only did camera sales bloom, lenses went through the roof.....
I won't return to emulsion based photography either.

Why so serious?
