Shutter lag in Mirrorless Cameras

4 years 2 months ago #674088 by Ted Baker
I'm thinking about jumping to mirrorless, however had waited for three reasons.  Earlier mirrorless didn't have all that AF systems, the viewfinders weren't all that, and I read that some mirrorless cameras had shutter lag.  The first two on my list as I can see have been address and done very well.

What about shutter lag?  Is that still a problem?

You won't be able to distinguish a difference in shooting between mirrored or mirrorless. Early on there was a significant evf lag where the refresh rate was behind the action. That's not really a problem now. Lower end cameras still suffer a bit from this but that's not the norm now. My E-M1 MKII has "pro capture" which means when it is set to this, it will record the prior 14 frames from triggering the shutter if you had initiated a half press. You will capture the decisive moment.

I'll expand. I agree with Randy and I've read no complaints of mirrorless lag, but if there was I'd have issues with that, especially in action or wildlife photography....

G'day Ted

I've been running mirrorless for many years now - the Panny G2 is now getting long in the tooth and has last year been replaced by the Panny 2500

Shutter lag has never been a problem - either in single-image shoot mode or in burst / cotinuous mode

Focus-lag is different - with the G2 focus was not always super-fast but certainly fast enough most times

Focus lag in the 2500 varies a bit as I am told many dSLRs sometimes hit the wrong thing to focus on, but when I shoot in 30fps continuous mode with full AFC active, it can keep up with just about most things

To my knowledge there aren't too many dSLRs that can shoot 30fps with AFC active and working well

Hope this helps

There is no meaningful shutter lag in mirrorless cameras so it is no longer a problem.  I'm a mirrorless user myself and can't tell the difference between my cameras and an SLR.

Ted - in a separate post I will show some pics from a couple of nights ago taken at the local fun park - the high speed 'whizzer' and passengers as they flew past me

It is impossible for an EVF to be instantaneous. Whatever you do, there will be a delay between reality and what you see.

That's a problem for some people.

G'day all

Following Gary's response re: EVF ...
Gary could you or one of the dSLR people here help me with info

How fast can a "regular / consumer level & priced" dSLR shoot in fps before you need to go to mirror lock for even faster shooting? (ie: not something like the $4000~$5000 things the 'togs at the Olympics or the pro Tennis circuit use]

I ask the Q as I realise the optical system is "instantaneous" whereas the EVF cycles at 60hertz and if one pans the camera violently, one sees 'panning stripes' ~ but I stress also the word violently.  60hertz certainly gives as 'instantaneous' as suits me anyway

My Panny will give me full AF-C and EVF live view at 7fps at 20mpx resolution and at 30fps at 8mpx resolution ... surely this is enough for most of us "non-pros" ?

Define "consumer"? For Nikon, there's a lot of overlap in their products.

My D850, ostensibly "pro" (whatever that means) shoots at 7 fps on one battery, 9 fps with the grip. Most of what I've seen falls into the 6-10 range, and it takes the high end models to get 11-14 fps.

The new D780, in lock-up mode, will shoot 12 fps with no black-out (if I recall correctly what I read).

I was shooting birds in flight last weekend at the Bosque del Apache, in continuous mode, and I'm not sure 7 fps was adequate. But I do it casually, so not sure what best practices are.

I think "enough" is situational, and there's no one answer.
