15 stitch vs 9 stitch panoramic layout?

4 years 2 months ago #674181 by Randall McNabb
When it comes to creating a panoramic, are you going with the notion that more is better?  Such as the example of a 15 stitch over a 9?  I'm new to panoramic photography and read on photographers comments on DPR last week who stated 15 was over kill and that 9 was all you need.  However if you want more detail, wouldn't the 15 stitch be better as you are able to zoom in more, and capture more detail?

No, Randall, and it will depend on the overlaps — only these
will tell you how many shots are needed to cover the scene.

Fifteen would be waaaaay to short as the better way to come
to that result is to shoot well planned rows and columns.

Won't the 15 just give you more overlap and better detail?  I don't have a bunch of pano experience either but would guess more photos would give you better coverage.

Coverage, Neil, that is needed when the axises levels
were not scrupulously taken care of at the stitch start.

The overlaps won't bring much else than to ease the
computational work of the stitching software and pos-
sibly reduce the nasty final crop.

The number of shots is irrelevant, not all panos are the same.  Over lap should be 1/4 to 1/3 of each shot.

Why so serious?
