This is why you don't lend out your camera to anyone

In my neighborhood, houses are kind of close to one another.  I was cleaning out my garage earlier and could hear my neighbor yelling at someone.  We are pretty tight and often have great conversations.  Curious, I stepped out of my garage to see what was going on, he saw me and I noticed he was on the phone.  About 10 minutes goes by and he comes over.  Turns out, a brand new Sony A7R IV he picked up 6 weeks ago, was leant out from his wife to her brother originally with out his consent.  She told him that night, and he decided that it was OK.  Well his brother in law went to Hawaii and dropped the camera in the ocean.  They got back earlier and just told him about the accident.  Apparently the camera and lens had no insurance on it either.  Yikes.

Ruined.

Another example of why you don't lend out camera gear!

Just another instance where the family doesn't communicate with each others. In our family everyone knows my camera is off limits to anyone and everyone. Even allowing anyone to touch the gear is taboo. Is it reason for a divorce?. No but I can bet the wife wont be touching any of her husband's other things for a long time.

If I was your neighbor, I'd be receiving a new camera and lens from the brother in law, or a particular wife and her brother would also find deep water. Insurance wouldn't have paid off on that anyway for your neighbor.

Why so serious?

+1 Yes and Yes!

I'm friends with his wife, so I avoided taking any sides.  Just gave my general "oh man, so sorry to hear this" view on the matter.

My heart breaks hearing about this.  What a shame.  I don't lend out my gear at all.  I hope his brother in law does what is right and takes care of him with a replacement.

dang, that sucks.  I've had a friend ask to use my camera.  Nope, didn't go for it.  I know it's just a object.  It's reasons like this I don't want to be in.

You know, there a a couple people I'd loan a camera or lens to, but they're good friends and my sons...NONE of them would ever ask!

Damn that seriously sucks.  I'm with you, I don't lend out my stuff at all.  To many headaches, even if a small scratch showed up.
