I like the central Adirondacks, a few places almost a ten on dark sky map and my son and I go there every year or so. I don't need no stinking permit, maybe its time to spend more time in NW Maine, where they haven't gone totally insane yet!

I moved out of NY State in 1983 because of their high and  "creative" taxes on everything, and the cold brutal Winters there. Don't even get me started on their Airport Authorities, Bridge, Authorities, Highway Authorities, etc. as in my opinion they are taxation without representation. The "Authorities" can set their own budgets and tax levels without giving the people the ability to accept or reject it.

This is NOT a tax on stargazing... of course it didn't get any notice in mainstream media, it's in one state, where people need to get a PERMIT to use the park at NIGHT, after dark, when the parks are CLOSED. There's info. on getting permits to be in the park at night for stargazing, night fishing, etc. etc. So, either leave at dark or get a permit to be there after dark (for obvious reasons I'd think!).

In my area parks are closed at night, if you're there you'd need to leave before the park closes and locks gates, etc. The only park I know of in my area that doesn't close overnight is a large state park with a lodge, cabins, etc.

That site linked seems to be making something out of nothing to get people to look, so they can make money from ad revenue, selling their swag, etc.

"Others are defending the permit in the thread, claiming that it allows people to enter the “closed parks” after hours. But they are clearly missing the point. If you can enter the park with a permit, then it’s not “closed” at all. It’s opened to anyone willing to be extorted or who can afford it. Those who are unable to pay the government or choose not to do so for the exact same activity will be arrested and or further extorted."

A fee, tax or otherwise.....Its a charge to view the night sky.
