Magic Plate stability

4 years 2 months ago #675487 by Paul Velasco
I'm always keeping an eye out on Kickstarter for photography related products.  This one jumped in front of me today.  Now half me thinks this is cool, and the other half thinks, "well, can't my ball head already do this"?

Am I missing something?

Looks like a fine idea. Myself, I'm already invested in a "L" bracket and Swiss Acre clamping which gets it done for me.

Why so serious?

That would be great if it tilts to a perfect 90° but it doesn't.

And you're right, your bullhead will do the same fur sure with
some more weight.

Both, that device and your bullhead, will end in an off axis pos-
sition… and this is where the L bracket will shine.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I will never understand the idea that flipping from landscape to portrait mode, or vice-versa, is something that must be done with haste. If you're using a tripod, you've already committed to slowing down. Why would anyone think that loosening a clamp is that much of a challenge?

Aren't you going to need to reposition the camera anyway? How is this single thing so critical?

I also wonder about this device moving the weight off-axis. Seems kinda dumb, too? The whole point of balance is to aid in stability.... isn't it?

Hmmmm, not sure what I think of this thing.  I'd need to see more user reviews.

With added motion, I'd be concerned how tight it feels when you lock in place after a few months of use. Other than that, looks cool.

Yeah sure, I'd use it.  But won't buy from Kickstarter.  I'll wait for it to be in Adorama.

+1 I'm with you as well.  But it looks like they have product to ship as it's showing May to April?
