LG Smart Phone taking better pictures than Canon EOS T5

Hello everyone,

I was just passing through death valley, ca and snapped a few pics. The attached pic is using the canon camera in "P" mode and zoom not used. The other was with my smartphone.

I thought an 18mm camera should be taking better pictures? Any suggestions?

What camera would you have used in such a location?

Make: Canon
Model: Canon PowerShot SX530 HS
ISO: 100
Aperture: f/5.0
Shutter speed: 1/1000 sec
Captured: Wed, 1 Mar 2017 4:50am
Make: LG Electronics
Model: VS835
ISO: 50
Aperture: f/2.2
Shutter speed: 364/1000000 sec

Um, define "better"?

If you mean sharper front to back, the mobile phone's 4mm or less focal length means more things are "in focus". Even at 18mm, not so much.

As for general sharpness and color, are we looking at a JPG from the Canon? Then you're comparing apples to oranges, because JPG processing is up to the software in the device. No, they won't produce identical results.

Frankly, the top one (from the Canon) has more potential to create a decent image, as opposed to snapshots.

Nether image is very desirable. Plus time of day would have helped both images but over all the Canon image has more color then the flat LG. Even after using a couple of preset filters, nothing worked on "enhancing" Either of these images. these would be classified as mere tourist shots. Not having any composition and somewhat grainy. Again this all boils down to timing, and a better lens maybe even getting closer to the subject.

A couple of things worth mentioning, if one was at this location in the middle of the day, a polarization filter on the camera would have help and could have been used because the sun was directly over head. Ideally, early morning or early evening when the shadows are more idea on the mountains and darker clouds etc. Because I shoot everything in auto mode I would have tried several settings with a better lens. Seeing how I only have a 50mm & 100mm I would have used both just to see which image would turn out better.

"What camera would you have used in such a location?"...

The one with some controls, like the Canon T5.

Why so serious?

Agree, the top one seems to have more dynamic range, which in the end will give you more options.
