When shooting video are you shooting 24p or 30p?

Hello, does it make a difference when shooting video between 24p and 30p?

Or is this just a preference thing?  If so, what is your preference?

24 is what most movies are shot in and gives the most 'real' like viewing experience.

Um, no. Higher frame rates are equated to the appearance of "real". Think video tape, which is at 30 fps.

Film speed, typically 24 fps, has a different, "film" look. But it's not typically considered real.

Your choice of frame rate will have an effect on the shutter speed you use, which will then have an effect on available light and motion blur. Typically your shutter speed will be double your frame rate and since higher shutter speeds let less light in, you need more light to shoot a higher frame rate. Another reason to shoot 24p is the same reason it became standard in film in the first place: it's cheaper. Shooting higher frame rates takes up more memory and needs more computing power and time to process and more powerful lights to light your scene.

Having said all that, the difference between 24p and 30p in these factors isn't huge. If we're talking about 60p though, it's a pretty big jump.

As stated, higher frame rate yields a smoother video.

Why so serious?
