Is there a way to fix clipped audio? How to Prevent from happening in future?

4 years 1 month ago #677803 by Amy Porter
I've had this happen a few times where I'm shooting video for wedding and suddenly either someone will speak super loud or noise will come into my recording that is very loud and cause the audio to red line.

I've tried isolating the audio clips in post with keyframes and dropping just the clipped part, but this just lowers the clipped audio, not hid it or fix it.

Can it be fixed and how can this be prevented in the future?

Thank you!!

Hi Amy,

From my experience as a musician — I don't do videos — a so called
"peak limiter" should be added before the sound recorder.

There is always a delay in m/s to trigger it but a peak is easier to fix.

Unfortunately, clipping audio is comparable to blown highlights: the detail is gone, and there's no recovery.

You have to ensure your input signal levels are not too high, or you employ a peak limiter/compressor.

Amy, In retrospect, it's best that if you're going to make a video which includes sound have or use a separate sound recording devices set up on your ques. I've used this on several occasions seeing how I would wonder in and around the band or crowd. Mainly set up to shoot the video but have the sound recorder setup in a isolated spot to get a good sound quality from the band without distortion. Later mesh the sound and video using video editing software.

A peak limiter will be enough. A compressor will introduce lots
of noise in your track that you maybe want to keep clean in quiet
moments… it's all in the threshold of the limiter.

The whole thing is to set the VU to the highest value (+ .5 ~+1)
for the loudest input and check that the limiter will filter up the
input signal to +1.

The limiter will take care of the high input while the compressor
handles the low end.

A lot of audio recorders will allow you to record two separate tracks at different levels for exactly this reason. They record one at the level you want and then automatically record a backup at a lower level in case of sudden noise.
