How does dust get into newer zoom lenses?

4 years 1 month ago #678666 by Adam S
On a Facebook photography page I belong on, another photographer was talking about how his new from last year 70-200mm has dust inside of the lens.  How is this possible, aren't these things weather sealed?

With out more on the lens, can't say much.

I know that the better way to avoid such problems is
to go for IF lenses; more expensive indeed but, more
than weather sealed, they are not dust pumps.

All lenses breathe, even IF glass. Zooms just breathe more.

Why so serious?

The only thing he's mentioning is that it's a Canon 70-200mm

Meant is, that when focusing or zooming, air will
go in and out of the barrel… breathe.

G'day Adam
let's not get too involved in funny American spelling of common English words.

OHHHH I see what you are saying now.  Interesting, so does this happen with all lenses?

Thank you!

IF lenses — internal focusing — means that when focusing
all the movements are internal ie the lens won't change in
length. When a zoom lens is IF, the same applies… and that
alone makes it easier to "weather seal" them as they don't
act as air pumps or dust pumps.

Activate the focus ring or the zoom ring and listen carefully.
IF lenses will remain silent while the non IF will breathe.

Yes is the answer. Even non IF primes less than zooms.
