Why not Canon and Nikon manufacture in USA?

Why not? 

I think the days of being dependent on foreign countries to make our cameras is old school.  Cost can't be that much more to manufacture.  

Makes you wonder if they have considered.  Would you buy a 'Made in USA' camera vs Japan or China?

China no but Japan ok

60 years ago, Japan was producing for cheaper but today they
are on par with most western countries. Moving all that the North
America would be very costly and NA doesn't have the expertise.
Light is free… capturing it is not!

G'day Chris

The 'bean counters' of industry have made this happen over the last 40 - 50 years via chasing the cheapest labour costs. Who is going to pay $20 per hour when somewhere else does it for $2 per hour because that country's costs are only 1/10 ours?

Would you be prepared to pay $8000 for your next camera against todays $800? for example

Tax breaks and the elimination of the minimum wage law could possibly get their interest. Another issue is who would they hire, we are producing the dumbest high school grads on the planet now, NO tech, science or math....

Yeah yeah I get it.  But look at the overall larger cost to all of this.  I don't think an $800 camera would cost $8000 here in the states.  I'm sure that might have been a random figure for example.  However I would think automation could play an important roll.  Besides, after this recession, we'll need Americans working and spending $$.  Good time to fire up some camera plants for all us photographers.   :)

Have you seen the video of all the parts in a modern DSLR? They're already using automation. There's no savings there just because you run the robot in the US. I don't really think labor is cheap in Japan. And Nikon doesn't build their equipment in China.

All progress is built on cheap labor. And that no longer exists in this country. Manufacturing on a large scale is not coming back, not for cheap goods. Period. Not gonna happen. A certain segment of the population of this country needs to accept that. Denying unions isn't gonna make a difference, either. Wages need to be appropriate for the cost of living. But it's not going to be based on factory-based manufacturing.

News flash: the current problem is world-wide. Global pandemic, global solution. We'll all in this together.

Automation or manual labor, you should understand what it takes to tool up a "factory", and then the training as everything can't be automated. Its tremendously costly, Nikon and Canon will ride this thing out.

+1 agree, China just provides parts.  Japan is where all the magic happens for the most part.  I'm OK with Japan building of course, in the USA would likely be a lot more on the wallet.  Why mess with what is working.  What should be done is the world find alternative methods for parts vs China, I too am disappointed in China government and blind eye approach to this who situation.  It's time they start losing their power they hold over world manufactures.
