What size bulb for constant lighting for still photography?

I was looking at some light bulbs used in still photography and they go up to 500w.  Seriously?  I'm going to order some bulbs and a shop light, actually 2.  Will 150w bulbs work?

I want to work on product photography.

The difference is the stronger the bulb, the more working distance from the light you have. If you get close enough, then the 150W will be fine. I would suggest you look at cool lights though. I think they tend to last longer and you won't accidently get burned. Hot lights need to be handled carefully when they are still hot.

Such high output, and hot bulbs will restrict you
to use reflectors behind hanging diffusors.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Why so serious?

Aren't those reflectors heat resistance for these sort of situations?

The metal ones? Sure… what ever the metal but,
of course, not those of plastic

Why would a special light be needed for product photography? I could get fine results with window  light, or a diffused 75 watt bulb.

Heat is costly and bad for given subjects!

Yes it is and if they are the photo blue ones corrected for daylight color, they put out a tremendous amount of heat. I have two of those and man they get hot. I haven't used them in years. They are in storage.
