Photography workshops vs Coronavirus

4 years 2 weeks ago #680952 by J Photo Man
I was just thinking about the photographers who run the workshops as their main income.  I had to cancel one for obvious reasons and was just thinking about when I booked it.  They explained how they need to have accurate head count because the hotels and van rentals are paid upfront along with food that is delivered in.  What a PITA this has got to be for these people.  It is so horrible when you think about how these and so many other people lives are flipped upside down right now.  Many of those photographers who have taken deposits now having to refund those funds.  Not good.

For the last 10 years and in a slowly increasing part of my
working hours, I am on the teaching, mentoring side of it
— image hunting and wildlife, either live or online.

With the movement restrictions these days — I don't meet
clubs but the online 1:1 activities are booming.

So sorry to hear, what are you doing to pass time now?

I have a couple of photographers on my contact list, who had photography courses lined up for the month of April, now are being forced to cancel, subject to the ongoing lock-down. A lot of professional photographers depend on camps like these for their sustenance. I heard that the UK has opted to pay even self-employed folks like these. However, in India, there seems to be no such relief as such.

In the last weeks, I had to complete easter catalogues and
then… nothing. Luckily for me, 1:1 on-line sessions went up.

After I finished the long standing ironing. I started to go to
the marsh almost every day for both physical exercise and
to grab the early Spring scenes that may come like this nes-
ting Grebe alarmed by an Egret passing by too closely:

I had one that was cancelled up in Banff in June.  :(    I'm not going to book anything until things are 100% cleared up.

Very unfortunate what is happening, I hope all those good people running these workshops weather this storm.

I've seen websites like Meetup still uploading photography workshops for the month of May and further. I don't even know if this is an auto-subscription sort of thing. Even tried contacting a few to clarify, but to no revert. Folks are being hit bad by this, I hope things turn out well for them in the end.

I found this post to be very enlightening. It deals with photographers having to settle for non-intimate sessions online. It's a good read.

I have been reading about this and learned that many workshops weren't able to give refunds, which has pissed off plenty of people and casted a poor view on the workshops.  Very unfortunately.

Of course not!

There was a plan to have a master class in the Danube delta
in June 2020 — cancelled for the reasons all know.

When, in mid March 2020, I was finalising negotiations of the
plane fares, booking facilities and transportation for 28 people
as the CVD19, nothing had then been signed or paid and I re-
funded everyone but kept 65€ per person for the work as said
in the contract.

IF I had paid for anything that couldn't be cancelled, that would
then have not been possible.

Tell me about it.  I had a trip to Iceland last month that was cancelled.  Very unfortunate times.

There are photography fellows in various parts of the world, who are basically 'calling off" the entire year, along with half of 2021. The scene has cause tremendous anxiety within the community. Those photographers who are still committed to their bookings, are cognizant enough to know that they're doing so under copious amounts of strain. I hope the situation in abated at the earliest for things to go back to normal soon.
