Nikon D5300 or Canon Rebel T7i for beginner?

4 years 2 weeks ago #681142 by Rob Conley
Our daughter wants to get into photography and I have narrowed down the cameras in budget that she likes and before Covid 19 she did handle and from an ergonomic standpoint, these two are the camera bodies that she liked.

Out of these which would you go with and why?  We seem to be on a fence.  I'm a Canon shooter so seem to be bias for no reason when looking past the specs of each of these. She has been on the fence for the last 2 weeks and I'm going to speed things up and help her decide.  This is where this thread comes in.

Appreciate your help.

Rob

Which system do you (does she) want to buy into?

As for ergnomics, usually one product will feel better, make more sense, be more comfortable. I.e. just "feel" right. That's the one you want. The one you don't want to put down.

Past that, it's a toss-up. The two choices are comparable in pretty much every way, and both systems offer comparable choices for the future.

Seeing that you are a Canon shooter already, going with a Canon would allow her to use some of  your lenses.  So that might cut down on upfront cost.

I agree with the other previous responses. Go with Canon because you already have Canon lenses that could be used. Get the camera body and let her try your lenses until she finds which she likes best, but how the camera feels to her when in her hands is highly important too. Then she, or you, can get the preferred lenses for her. No new DSLR or mirror less camera is a  bad camera today. They all take great photos, just some have more features and cost more. Find the one that feels good and has the options, or capability to add the options that she will want later, and go with it. When she learns more and can afford to upgrade, then she can trade up to the better camera.  I like the Canon feel and capabilities too.

That's what I was saying, these two cameras are the final choices from a number of cameras we tested and considered for her.  These are the final two.  We/she is  on the fence.  I posted this hoping there might be something regarding  one  of these cameras that we missed that made it a better or worse choice.

It's a Ford - Chevy thing. Both are good cameras, but you don't already own Nikon (Nikor) lenses
that could be used with the new camera, and you do already own Canon lenses, making the initial purchase a bit cheaper, since no additional lenses need to be purchased immediately. Once she has tried out the lenses that you already own, she, or you, can then purchase those lenses for her camera. The decision on lenses will vary greatly depending on what type of photography that she ends up doing and enjoys. The initial cost will be lower, and money won't be wasted on lenses that get little or no use.

This is my voice of experience. In the past 22 years I have owned 4 digital cameras, and each was a different brand. Nothing from one can easily be used with another. I would have been much better off financially if I had stuck with just one brand.or had family or friends with the same camera brand that I could try before buy the lenses and options that I thought I wanted before buying it. I am quite isolated when it comes to having someone else to do this with, or even access to a place that rents.
I am very happy with my latest Canon camera, a 77D, and at this time I am now quite convinced that a Canon camera will be my next camera too.

I think that forcing a decision based upon what you already own is a Bad Idea.

If you haven't gone back to the store to reassess, you might consider that.

You might also consider asking about the reasons for her hesitation. It will help you better understand her as a person.

Are you in a hurry? Is there some reason the decision (looks as if it) has a deadline?

Having started down this road, making a choice now would be a mistake, IMNSHO. Let her take the lead, and suffer the consequences of indecision. I.e. let her own this.

But what do I know. I've only been married 38 years.
