Teleconverter question

Out of pure curiousity, why aren't teleconverters built into more lenses?  Some have a teleconveter built into the lens, so why not all that are pro level?

Because TC are, in my experience, just another impairment
to the characteristic sharpness of my long lens. At this point,
I haven't met with acceptable TCs.

OTH, I haven't tried the 800 mm that comes with it own and
not interchangeable TC.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Very few lenses (Nikon: 1?; Canon: 1?) have this feature. It's expensive, and must be tailored to the lens. It's only applicable on long lenses. And it adds cost. Have you priced the NIkon 180-400? Over $12,000.

A little bit of research will reveal that add-on TCs cost you image quality. The Nikon TC 1.4 II is around 15%-20% loss. It gets worse in the 1.7 and 2.0. Can't comment on the Canon units.

I really don't see this becoming a "thing".

Yeah, it never hurts to ask, but doing this would be unnecessary expense.
