What is the purpose of manually selecting one of thousands of autofocus points?

I was just thinking about something.  Have you noticed camera makers speak about having a zillion autofocus points, and each one being able to be selected manually?  What is the purpose of that?  Let's say you have 4000 autofocus points, well, who is going to purposely zoom in on autofocus point #3723 for example?

You're totally missing the point. More focus points means they cover more of the image area. You can select the focus point that is on the subject without having to focus and recompose which will give more accurate focus. There are other reasons but that is the first and main reason.

Ahhhhh, yes, I was missing the mark on this one.  Crystal clear now.  Thank you for the morning enlightenment!

I use single point AF with BBF, and I move the AF point
as needed in all the work I do.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
