Canon 90D for Portrait Photography

Hi All!I had a professional Nikon camera which I received from the photography program I took in college. A few years ago I decided I
wanted to switch to video, so I went out and traded my professional
Nikon camera for a Canon Rebel t5i as it shoots great
video........................I'm sure I don't need to say that was hands
down the dumbest thing I have ever done. I did not end up pursuing
video and have been kicking myself for this decision ever since. I am
getting back into photography after giving it up for a couple of years
and obviously need to get a professional camera. I will be shooting mostly portraits such as head shots/branding photos/family sessions, no weddings. My budget is limited and at the moment all I can afford is the Canon 90d. I want to stick with Canon because I did purchase lenses for my
rebel which I'd like to use because again, my budget is very limited and
I can't afford to switch brands and get new lenses as well as a new
body. So my plan is to get the 90d and use it until I can save enough to
get a full frame camera.I'd like to hear your opinions on this plan. I don't want to throw away money again on a crappy camera that I'm going to hate/isn't going
to do the job, but I also can't afford to spend thousands right now. Do
you think the 90d will suffice for the first couple of years while I get
my business up and running again and can eventually afford an even
better camera? I'm confident enough in my work that I don't feel I need
the best camera out there, but the t5i held me back so much as there
were so many limitations and I don't want that to happen again.Sorry for the long post! Would love to hear your thoughts :)

Quality captures are most likely lens dependant… bodies
having the important minor roll to set up the conditions
of the shoot.

That is why investing in lenses is a crucial & better move.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You've already switched brands. Unless you have a compelling reason, your logic for staying with Canon is solid.

You don't mention what lenses you currently have, but they should work on a 90D. If you progress you'll find that you will want to acquire additional lenses in the future. Note that you don't always have to buy them new.

That said, the 90D offers 4K video (in addition to HD) so if you decide you want to explore that, you'll be set. The resolution of the 90D is quite high, and should perform reasonably well in low light.

Plus, this is a very good time to buy, and there's a Father's Day sale going on, too.

That said, that camera should reasonably last you several years. You'll know if you wish to progress, and that will guide your buying decisions. Yes, glass is most important, but a decent sensor is a good thing, too. I built my skills on a 16MP camera (D5100) that lasted me 5 years before I moved to full frame (D750).

Finally: ensure that the 90D addresses the limitations you discovered with the Rebel. Or at least, you know where you stand, and what you're willing to tolerate. Since you don't list them, we can't comment.
