Question regarding lenses with aperture range

3 years 9 months ago #690490 by Olivia
I'm thinking about pre ordering a Canon 100-500mm RF f/4.1-7L.  I've not had a variable aperture lense before.  How does this work?  100mm would be f/4.1 and 500mm f/7?

Can you use a teleconverter on something like this?

Yes, you got that right. These lenses change their morphology
as they zoom in and out and as they focus — they may get im-
pressively longer from one end of the focal range to the other.
And so do not wear the "IF" designation badge showing that
they are neither sealed or resistant.

I prefer to invest in "IF" lenses when available — pricy though.

I don't even use TCs on prime lenses of any length because of
the loss in quality. Being in the publishing industry, quality is a
most important criteria. I've seen that many do… each his own!

Well with the TC's you lose just 1 stop of light with each 1.X right?

Yes, but that's only part of it. Since a TC isn't integral to the lens, there will be some loss of image quality (IQ). How much is dependent upon the TC's magnification factor, and I believe the lens in question.

My (Nikon) 1.4 II gives me 85%-ish IQ on my 200-500. Not horrible, but noticeable.

You will also want to ensure that your intended TC is compatible with the intended lens. For Nikon, at least, TCs can't be used on just any lens.

Yes but it has to do with the size of the "tube" and not the
magnification factor.

When using Nikon TCs…

a 1.4x teleconverter, you lose 1 stop of light. When using a
f/2.8 lens, the widest effective aperture is ƒ/4

a 1.7x teleconverter, you lose 1½ stops of light, When using
a f/2.8 lens, the widest effective aperture is f/4.5

a 2x teleconverter, you lose 2 stops of light. When using a
f/2.8 lens, the widest effective aperture is f/5.6.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
