How to photograph people around campfire?

3 years 9 months ago #690794 by Sharna Lee
If you want to get a nature look, yet everyone properly exposed around a campfire, how would you go about it?  My photos from last week, all just don't look right.  Either my friends were properly exposed or the fire was.  Not both.  Any suggestions?

Thank you.

P.S. I do have a flash, but was trying to get a nature look.

The emitted light from the fire is waaaay stronger than
the reflected light from the subject… you may get good
results if both are at the same distance from the camera.

Using a flash is a good idea if you shoot in M and EV/TTL.

Couldn't you bounce light off a gold reflector?

You shouldn't need a reflector, that camp fire will push off plenty of warm light as it is.  Why not set your flash to back curtain?

If you crank your ISO up and wide aperture, getting campfire shots are pretty easy.

We head out tomorrow for a long weekend camping, good timing to see this post.  I'm bringing my camera gear with me.
