Can you tell me whats the point of a short macro lens?

So these lenses block some of the light on the subject because how close they are right?  So on that basis, would you s the 85mm is the better way to go?  That way you have a little more breathing room and stand chance of scaring the subject away?

The point of a short macro lens is that it is preferable
when work should be done on a copy stand.

85mm? Not quite convincing, go to 105mm for better
distance or even a 200 macro for dangerous subjects.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

One possibility is context. Also, a shorter focal length gives you more DoF. Here's an example using a 15mm macro:

WOW, not to get side tracked on my question, but that photo is perfection!

So simply put, you wouldn't use your 15mm macro on insects for example, more for landscape style macro shots?

There's no fixed answer. It depends upon what I envision. But a short focal length isn't going to magnify much, whereas a long focal length will. Note that "macro" will mean a closer minimum focusing distance, and higher reproduction ratio.

The whole reason that there are different lenses is because there are multiple parameters to a shot, and some things require combinations that you might not otherwise consider.

Thanks for your complement. The flower is maybe 2 inches across.

Here's a snail, perhaps 1.5" across. It's a fun lens, because it's so odd.

Shorter macros are cheaper and people looking for a "bargain" will buy them. Macro lenses are like long lenses. You get what you pay for.
