Camera set to RAW + JPG shooting?

Aside from just taking up additional space on the memory card, and longer to write on the card, are there any disadvantages to shooting RAW + JPG?

Speaking of which, why do cameras always default from factory in JPG?

Hey Craig,

There are two kinds of shooters that really benefit from jpg files.
The top sports pro shooters who MUST have the shots back to
the publishers quickly and the entry level, occasional shooters.
In all my cameras, it is RAW+RAW BU.

I do convert some RAWs to full res jpgs to open them in a pixel
editor for extensive work and these will be kept in the same fol-
der as the RAWs.

For the forum, I will convert to 1200 px long side to post and bin.

Maybe because some will want to test fire away? A perfect sce-
nario for a beginner that won't temper with the menu but advan-
ced shooters will know what has to be done.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

There is no disadvantage. The JPG processing is quick. Shooting in RAW+JPG can give you an example of what the camera created, which might be useful as a reference point. Also, having the JPGs means you could post/share an image immediately, then do real editing later.

Re: settings. Something has to be the default, right?
