Approaching someone who hasn't returned my lens?

I'll bet she lied. In any event, you know what vehicle he drives? Time for some stalking, or at least a stake out. Or show up at 6:00 AM and wait outside until 8:00 AM, then knock on the door again.

Dang, that isn't looking good.  I would camp at his driveway and wait till he comes in or heads out.   Box him in.

Dude, that seriously sucks.  Another reason why not to let anyone use your gear.  I wouldn't want to be  in your shoes for this.

Good luck

+1 you got my thoughts as well.  Don't ever lend out gear.

  1. You contact him (phone, ideally) and say, "I'm going to come pick up my lens. What's a good time?" And you don't let him off the hook. Or let him change the subject. Or defer.
  2. You also prepare for the possibility that he sold something that wasn't his. And you decide from there whether he will remain a "friend", and whether you ever loan anyone anything ever again.

:agree:    Sound advice right here.   Answer to the back end of the question should be a big NO.

Yep that sucks.  Nothing new I can say that hasn't been said already.  At the end of the day, I'm sure this will be a learning lesson for you and others who read this.   Might be best use of your time to step up aggressively (small claims) or walk away and hope somewhere down the road, the guy does the right thing and pays you for the lens replacement.  It's that middle ground (chasing him around) that can drive you up the wall.

I wouldn't want to be in that position.  Accidents can happen, and in this case, something completely different.  I'm not a fan of lending anything out as well.

Accidents is one thing, selling your friends stuff is another.  I'd be OK with an accident, selling my stuff, I'm not OK with.  No respect for the friendship.  Regardless how bad times are.
