Would you take an all expenses paid photography trip to Antarctica?

3 years 8 months ago #693594 by Roger Lang
If someone came up to you and offered you a free trip, completely paid for to Antarctica so you could photograph it, would you take it?

The catch:

You have to say there for 12 full months.

This completely random question came up in our photography meetup zoom call today.  The answers were all over the place.  Turns out if bills were paid for you during that time, there were a number of peeps that said they would go.

Not me, not for 12 months at least.  What about you?

I was in the Canadian Arctic several times, one of them was
for a year — ended up being 12m 5weeks (ice conditions).

I was young and with nothing to hold me back. If you have
a family, it is a different story altogether.

I was shortly embedded into military peace and wartime o-
perations as well — this was when I developed great respect
for the soldiers and not so much for the army.

The link? The camaraderie. I went through better expeditions
with science guys/girls than military — just a preference. This
is a chance of a life time to get an whole other view on our pla-
net — equivalent to being in the space station though different.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

More so with Covid, social distance doesn't get any better than that!

Not for a year,  perhaps 2-3 months at most.

Sounds tempting, but for a full year?

Perhaps if I was single and had no kids, but these days.  2 weeks is about the longest I could be gone for.

Especially right now with Covid, heck yes I would be down with doing this!  Dang, it's been 6 months already.

If I was single, in a heart beat.  This would be an adventure that would be tough to pass up.

Like many others, the biggest deterrent for me, is my family life.  As already mentioned, the same applies to me as well.  If I was single, yes I would, this sort of adventure would be fun and something for the old journal.

Yep, I'm with Gary on this one.  The key is me 20 years ago!  These days, I can barely get away for a couple days with out finding myself behind when I return!
