Does a battery need to cool before charging?

Scenario - you just got through using your camera, and the battery is drained, you pull it out and it's warm.

Question - can you pop that hot battery on the charger or should it be cooled first?

Yes Craig, if its under 40°C, it is pretty normal and, with the widely
used pulse driven charging technology, it will cool in the process.

1.
There is a lot happening in a battery and sub molecular level
and that generates heat. Warmth is not an issue but heat at
55°C + is revealing a power drainage in normal use or many
forms of possible defects.

2.
The infamous memory effect that came with sintered NiCad
cells is not observed anymore as it was replaced by other e-
electrical compounds, so there is no reason to discharge to
very low level any battery /pack — on the contrary.

I always let my batteries cool down before placing on a charger.  I seem to remember reading this somewhere in an owners manual that this is preferred and best practice.

My battery always cool because I'm following the camera user manual. I am always put my camera at 40°C. because it's better for camera battery condition.

Or may be you are in a place that keeps a content 40°C.

I, for one, would die in such temperature… not to mention
the hygrometric values that are associated with it.

The only way to keep such value is to no, or very slowly,
use the battery. Ion movements generate heat, always.
