Why was Ansel Adams referred to as the most famous photographers?

Last week on another site I saw a post regarding this very subject, then I just saw someone's post here regarding Ansel Adams.  I'm not trying to take anything away from Mr Adams or talk down.  However I feel there are so many fantastic photographers that have come and gone.  What made Mr Adams revered over so many other greats?  From what I can see and correct me if I'm wrong, his fame took place in the ramp up time for photography?  But if that is the case, I've noticed a number of photographers during that era that were as well.

So why?

Possibly if one is american but you are very right to temper that.

Sure, AA was a devoted photographer and an innovator as well
— just think of the zone system — but there were many that ca-
me before or were contemporaries that inspired his work and
drove his energy.

He may well be the most famous pioneer american photogra-
pher  but, on the world stage, he is just an honourable member
of the pantheon.

I am still a big fan of his work. :P

Oh I agree, his work is stunning.  But the part that I have a tough time understanding is when you look at so many other photographers from his time, who had stunning work.  Good example these days you have Peter Lik who has been in the media, but that's because him and his team are marketing experts.   There are so many modern day photographers whos work is much better than Peter Liks (whos work is amazing already).  But you see my point?   Was Ansel Adams a marketing expert in his time, just like Peter Lik?

No, and he didn't care because it was not the hit at the time.

The US should be proud of their sons and, at the times where it
had plenty of hero soldiers, a great figure showed through the
crowd and was recognised as a pioneer — an other type of hero
the US is fond of.

AA was showing that the country is beautiful, in a beautiful way.
His devotion and work were happily recognised by his peers.

Recognition is everything. Soldiers, industrials, workers, and artists
alike, all crave for it — you and me as well.
