Image Stabilization on a Tripod

3 years 7 months ago #696634 by Jackson Rieger
Alright, let's get this question out there.  I've always been in the mind set that when you have your camera on a tripod, you shut off the image stabilization on the lens.  Well now more and more camera bodies have the image stabilization built into the cameras body.  If you want to shut it off, it's buried in the menu system. This makes turning this on and off no longer a quick process when you place your camera on a tripod.

So does it matter still to shut off image stabilization when on a tripod?

I've never turned off stabilization whether in the lens or in the body. I've never had either effect an image. I personally don't believe it necessary. The whole argument it will create motion because it's looking for motion to correct has never made sense to me. YMMV.

I've never turned on stabilisation… of any kind.

On a tripod it is useless but there is one tiny drawback:
it will slightly delay the trigger if you configured focus
acquisition prior to SR.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I don't use IS either.  I have tested it and learned that putting the camera on a tripod produces sharper images than a handheld IS exposure.

Yep, same here.  I never mess with it, it's always on.

G'day Jackson

A large slice of my stuff is long lens + hand held stuff and the O.I.S. system is always 'on'

Tripod work is not an everyday activitiy and I don't bother to turn O.I.S. 'off' when on the tripod ~ and I have never noticed much if any difference. However, there =is= a difference if I am trying a long exposure in a breeze and the tripod starts to wobble from the breeze!!

Nope, never shut it off.  Just like others here, I don't mess with this function or rather turning it off. On tripod or not, it's always on.

+1 mine is always on as well.  Never see the need to turn off.
